Using beauty products is not new. Women have been seeking ways to beautify themselves since time began. Eve started it when she 'sewed fig leaves together'. Probably about the same time she started looking around at the fruits and plants in the Garden of Eden for ways to keep her skin, body, and hair soft, smooth, and sweet smelling.
Citrus Citrus trees didn’t find their way to Israel until the 1st Century, which means Salome might indeed have used something similar on her skin before her dance for Herod. It is thought that lemons came from Asia where it was used for healing and as an antidote for various poisons. Citrus came to Europe and Rome around the 1st century but weren't widely cultivated for centuries. The origin of the word 'lemon' suggests a Middle Eastern origin (Arabic laymūn or līmūn, from the Persian līmūn) indicating that it may have come from that area of the world.
